King Middle School Expeditionary Learning Project

In 2004, King Middle School (KMS) selected Minnow Brook, a small tributary to the Presumpscot, as the focus of their annual Expeditionary Learning Project. This innovative learning model uses interdisciplinary 'expeditions' that require students to conduct research, access local information resources and produce a quality product for presentation to the wider community. In addition to investigating Minnow Brook's water quality - which included a canoe trip down the Presumpscot - KMS students were encouraged to view the expedition from a naturalist's perspective. They created artwork, wrote essays and poetry, and documented the experience on video. Their final product was a professional caliber multimedia presentation to representatives from the various organizations participating in this truly remarkable event. The Minnow Brook project drew on the collective knowledge from a variety of other groups, including the Maine DEP, the Friends of the Presumpscot River, Portland Trails and IDEXX Laboratories - among others. KMS will be conducting another Expeditionary Learning Project on Minnow Brook this year and we hope to continue this fruitful relationship since today's inspired students will be tomorrow's community leaders!
